An incident happened in our game yesterday that I found puzzling.
We get a free kick near the edge of the opposition 18 yard line our player about to take the kick said to the ref
"Ref he's not 10 yards" No reply
"Ref he's lucky if he's 5 yards" No reply
"Ref can you count that he is only 5 yards away" (The twelve yard line gave a reference point)
Ref " I don't need to count yards get on with it"
Does a player have the right to ask for a yard count and is the ref correct to say he doesn't need to?
btw this isn't soor grapes, the game ended 2 - 2 and it was a fair result

theres no harm in asking for the 10 yards to be counted out

Always find when there is a free kick around the penalty area there is no need to count the yards out. Like you say there are several reference points. If the ball is near the penalty arc you simply take the wall back to around the penalty spot - that of course is 10 yards marked out for the ref.

The ref could have measured it with a tape measure and somebody would still have a moan about it.

I never did get an answer and as far as fourfourtwo's answer goes please read the post again and try basic comprehension, I didn't moan over a few feet it was about half the distance it should have been when the player requested a count

Bottom line is a ref doesn't have to step it out (not that accurate) however, it certainly helps when they do.
