In our game today, we were awarded an indirect free kick in the opposition box after our player was brought down. When asked why it wasnt a penalty, the ref wouldn't answer. Does anyone know why it would be an indirect free kick?

As far as I can judge the only circumstances which might fit it to an indirect free kick would be if the ref decided it was obstruction and not a foul. Maybe one of the refs using the forum might give a view.

Think you would need to expand on what you mean by brought down before you would get a definitive answer.

Opposing player challenged our player and actually took the ball, as well as the player. It was a fair challenge and to be honest we were shocked that the foul was given. I can only assume that the ref judged it to be obstruction like Morris says. Just havent ever saw an indirect freekick given in the box in those circumstances, when their was direct contact involved in the foul.
