A goalkeeper picks up a ball played through from an opponent inside his penalty area.
A forward then barges in to the goalkeeper who has the ball in his hands, the goalkeeper retaliates and slaps the forward in the face.
What should the referee award ?

Depends on whether the ref is going to give a foul for the barge on the keeper. If the ref thought it was simply his momentum causing him to collide with the keeper then he may not want to caution the attacking player. If this is the case and he allows the game to continue (i.e. did not award a free kick) then the keeper would be red carded for violent conduct and a penalty awarded. HOWEVER, if the ref had stopped play for the barge on the keeper he (the keeper) would be sent off for violent conduct despite the fact a free kick had been awarded in his favour.

Not quite sure what the circumstances would be where a slap in the face could be described as a defensive gesture on a football pitch.
